Dental Health

Dental disease affects 65% to 85% of all dogs and cats over 3 years of age.  Animals develop plaque at the gum line which is a mixture of bacteria, saliva and food particles.  The plaque mineralizes into tartar which leads to gingivitis and periodontal disease.  Periodontal disease can lead to tooth and bone loss.  In addition to the oral health problems, periodontal disease can affect the kidneys, liver and heart.  Signs of dental problems include bad breath, red, swollen or bleeding gums, inability to hold food in the mouth and reluctance to play with chew toys.   All animals should have the mouth examined annually and regular dental care performed in the hospital when needed.  There are also many home dental products that can be discussed to maintain the proper oral health for pets.
