Degenerative Joint Disease
Degenerative Joint Disease (Osteoarthritis) is a progressive disease of the joints that results in a loss of cartilage. It is typically caused by injury or trauma, developmental abnormalities (Hip Dysplasia), immune disorders or infections. The loss of cartilage leads to inflammation and pain. Common signs in dogs include inability to get up in the morning, slower on walks, decreased range of motion and joint swelling. Common signs in cats include decreased ability to jump, urinating or defecating out of the litter box and anti social behavior. There is no cure for degenerative joint disease, however, there are several therapies that can be used to improve the quality of life for those animals suffering from this disease.
