Obesity

Obesity can lead to significant health issues and lower the life expectancy of dogs and cats.  Approximately 1/3 of the dog and cat population is over weight.  This can lead to health issues such as arthritis, heart and liver disease, breathing difficulties and diabetes.  The most common causes for obesity are over feeding and inadequate exercise.  Low thyroid levels can also cause weight gain.  Obesity is determined by evaluating body condition scores.  The ability to feel over the ribs and spine ensures a proper body condition score.  There are many diets and programs that can be instituted to help maintain proper weight and ensure a healthy pet.
